Safety Tip of the Month

Is your flashlight explosive?
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been receiving reports of exploding flashlights. Flashlight batteries, if used incorrectly, can emit highly explosive gases.

To prevent hydrogen gas buildup, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for product use:
  • Do not mix batteries of different brands.
  • Do not mix old and new batteries.
  • Do not mix alkaline and non-alkaline batteries.
  • Do not use damaged batteries.
  • Make sure you have proper polarity when installing the batteries.

If possible, store flashlights empty to help prevent hydrogen gas buildup from occurring over time. However, always make sure batteries are easily accessible in case of an emergency.
